St. Michael Lutheran Church

Luther House

This organization exists because of the commitment on the part of St. Michael to provide affordable senior housing in Southern Chester County. The year 2001 was a momentous one. After seven years of planning and hard work, the first 68-unit building, "Luther House I", was completed in May. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and community open house occurred on May 20. Luther House I was totally filled by July 31. Construction of a second 68-unit building, "Luther House II," was completed by the middle of January 2002 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Sunday, January 27.

Since then, Luther House II and III have opened and Luther House IV will be dedicated on December 14, 2008. Residents will begin moving in to Luther House IV in early 2009.

Each apartment consists of one bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living/dining combo. There are laundry facilities on the second and third floors for the residents. The building also boasts a library with computers and Internet access, an activity room with big screen TV and a parlor for lounging. The rent is calculated at 30% of the residents’ income, and all utilities are included in the rent except for telephone and cable.

Many from St. Michael volunteer to fill in various positions at the facility. The Women of St. Michael and Youth have been steadfast in their support with programs and activities.

The building of this facility has truly been a success. Housing is being provided for a segment of our community that truly needs and appreciates it. Our commitment with the Government is a forty-year one (until the year 2040), and we hope the congregation of St. Michael looks forward to serving the elderly far beyond this time.
